Did you see the news that the Lib Dem run Somerset Council could be putting up our council tax by 7.5%!
This is 2.5% above the national cap of 5%.
The Lib Dems argue that this is 'Exceptional Financial Support' from the Labour Government as part of its budget setting for 2025/26.
What it really is, is extra funds direct from your pocket, because the Liberal Democrats have bought Somerset Council to near bankruptcy.
We will wait to see the outcome of the Somerset Council Budget meetings later this month and early March for more detail - but in the meantime we remind you of the words of Conservative Councillor and former Conservative Group Leader David Fothergill that he made in the The Leveller back in December 2023
"Let’s be very clear from the outset, local politicians are elected to run local services. They are locally accountable and whilst very tempting to shift blame to national government, the moral and legal responsibility lies with those local politicians as they are required to set balanced budgets."
